Intermittent fasting (IF) in its pure state has nothing to do with WHAT you eat, and everything to do with WHEN you eat. It’s an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. The 28toGreat program utilizes daily cycles of 16-hour fasts with 8 hours of eating, and also encourages eating Food Sass®—whole, nutrient-dense foods—as 80% of your food intake.
Intermittent fasting has been a practice throughout our evolution as a species. Sometimes that “practice” was because we couldn’t find food as a hunter-gatherer; and for many thousands of years, fasting has been done for spiritual or religious reasons.
IF has received attention over the past few years, and for good reason. There seems to be significant evidence—including research reported from the New England Journal of Medicine and Harvard Medical School—that IF has broad-spectrum benefits for improving or avoiding many health issues:
- Weight gain
- Blood sugar imbalances
- Cardiovascular disease
- Inflammatory conditions
- Neurologic disorders
Intermittent fasting works mainly by affecting cell signaling, unleashing the health benefits of growth hormone, boosting metabolism, reducing caloric intake, and allowing insulin levels to go down far and long enough that our body turns to our fat cells for energy needs, as opposed to burning carbohydrates. Although the introductory period can be a bit challenging for some, most people feel excellent once their body (and mind) has adjusted to the new eating lifestyle.
Intermittent fasting is very do-able as a long-term eating lifestyle, as is an 80/20 food lifestyle. This program that combines these two powerful and real-life approaches to eating will not only give you a re-set and metabolism boost, but can serve you, for life.
Some Clinical Notes
The small print: This is all fabulous and exciting. And IF has an outstanding safety profile. And there also some folks who this 28toGreat group program may not be right for. This particular program is not intended for folks who: are under 18 years of age; have advanced diabetes; are on diabetes medication; have a history of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia; or are women who are pregnant, breast-feeding, or wanting to get pregnant. A better program for most of these people would be The Body Sass® Cleanse.
To be clear: Intermittent Fasting can actually be exceptionally effective in healing type 2 diabetes. However, it can also be a bit dicey while the body adjusts; and blood sugar levels and any medications need to be monitored closely.
